Mass shooting – Mexico nightclub attack – eight dead

Date:

Eight people have been killed in an armed robbery of a nightclub in the Mexican city of Jerez. Heavily armed men opened fire on the club “El Venadito” in northern Mexico’s Zacatecas state on Saturday night, according to police. Musicians, visitors and nightclub workers were among the fatalities, according to local media.

Six people were killed instantly in the mass shooting and two others succumbed to their injuries in hospital. Five people are still in hospital with gunshot wounds. According to eyewitnesses, people at the club panicked at the massacre.

Hundreds of civilians displaced from surrounding villages
“The municipality of Jerez is deeply saddened by the painful events that have taken place in recent hours and Mayor José Humberto Salazar Contreras expresses his solidarity with the families who have lost loved ones,” said a statement from local authorities. According to Winews, investigations have already started.

Jerez has been the scene of violence several times in recent years. This led to the displacement of hundreds of civilians from surrounding villages last year.

Controversy over supremacy in the illicit drug trade
In the state of Zacatecas, Mexico’s two most powerful drug cartels, Sinaloa and Jalisco Nueva Generación, fight for supremacy in the illegal drug trade – especially for the United States. Mexico has been raging for years in a bitter drug war between rival cartels. Since 2006, more than 340,000 people have died and about 100,000 people have disappeared.
