Missing for days – seven dead in helicopter crash in Italy

Date:

In Italy, a helicopter with seven people on board was missing since Thursday. The wreckage of the plane was found at an altitude of 1,922 meters in the Apennines between the regions of Emilia Romagna and Tuscany. All seven bodies were recovered, rescue units said.

The wreckage was sighted on Mount Cusna in Reggio Emilia province in a streambed by a hiker who alerted police. The search in the steep mountainous area had been going on since Thursday. Helicopters and planes of the Italian Air Force had been deployed.

“Found everything burned”
The location was in a difficult to access area in a valley. Rescue workers should walk there. “We had coordinates and flew to the location. We found everything burned there,” an Air Force soldier said in a video tweeted by the military.

The helicopter was occupied by a total of seven people – the Italian pilot (33), four Turkish and two Lebanese civilians. He disappeared from the radar on Thursday on his way from Lucca in Tuscany to the northern Italian region of Veneto. The victims were paper industry executives who wanted to visit a company in Treviso.

Cause of crash still unclear
It was initially unclear why the helicopter crashed. A severe thunderstorm is believed to have hit the area at the time of the accident. Shortly before the crash, a passenger sent his son a short video showing the helicopter in the thunder. The video is now being investigated by the police.
