An outage in four countries kept the Balkans busy for hours on Friday. Numerous holidaymakers experienced the problems immediately on site. A group of high school students from Upper Austria also had to do without electricity for a short time during their trip; some of them describe their impressions to the “Krone”.
Suddenly nothing worked anymore. “We were just getting up when the first person said that the toilet wouldn’t flush, someone else’s hairdryer wasn’t working and it wasn’t possible to charge their mobile phone either,” said Simon Parzer, who, along with 15 of his friends, HTL Andorf Celebrated high school graduation in Šestanovac, Croatia. Initially, the graduates thought only the home’s electricity was affected. But in reality it was a much bigger problem.
International disruption
Due to an international disruption, large parts of Croatia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Serbia were without power on Friday. “Our water reserves were already a bit tight. We wanted to go to the supermarket, but everything was closed. The gas stations were also closed. The locals told us that it was something completely new that the power went out in four countries at the same time,” says Parzer the next day, when the group was already on the planned return journey.
Do not panic
“It was bizarre to see everything closed and nothing working. But there was no panic, we still wanted to spend the last day of our trip comfortably at the pool,” the group says about their impressions. At 4 p.m. the Upper Austrians had electricity again. The reason for the failure is said to have been the sharp increase in power consumption due to the heat.
