That went terribly wrong. In Kirchdorf an der Krems (Upper Austria) a serious incident occurred, not while erecting the maypole, but while cutting it down. The tree fell in the wrong direction and on the pharmacy. A 12-year-old boy was slightly injured by a steel cable.
About 100 people gathered on the town square in Kirchdorf an der Krems to witness the cutting of the maypole. As they tried to make the tree fall, a gust of wind blew through the square and caused the tree to fall in the wrong direction.
Roof damaged
Instead of falling on the open space, it fell directly on the facade of the pharmacy, causing significant damage. The roof of the house was also affected. When it fell, the maypole also cut through a steel structure to which the Christmas lights are attached in the winter. The rope injured a 12-year-old in the foot. No one else was injured in the incident.
The fire brigade then arrived on site, cleared the tree and removed the facade parts surrounding the village square.
