There is actually little chance that the 56-year-old career changer from Freiburg will soon set the tone in Florence’s city hall: in the first round of the Italian mayoral elections, challenger Schmidt, backed by the right-wing government coalition led by Giorgia Meloni, won almost 33 percent of the votes. He came second, behind the candidate of the social democratic Partito Democratico (PD), Sara Funaro.
