The second election is underway: will there be German rule in Florence from Monday?

Date:

The second election for mayor takes place in Florence until Monday. Former Uffizi director Eike Schmidt, backed by the right-wing Meloni camp, is running against Social Democratic candidate Sara Funaro. The race will be close. Can the German really pull off a sensational coup?

There is actually little chance that the 56-year-old career changer from Freiburg will soon set the tone in Florence’s city hall: in the first round of the Italian mayoral elections, challenger Schmidt, backed by the right-wing government coalition led by Giorgia Meloni, won almost 33 percent of the votes. He came second, behind the candidate of the social democratic Partito Democratico (PD), Sara Funaro.
