Images of an Israeli army counter-terrorism operation in the West Bank have sparked international outrage. As the armed forces have now confirmed, soldiers had tied an injured Palestinian to the hood of a jeep and transported him that way.
“The behavior of the armed forces in the video does not reflect the values of the IDF,” the military stressed. During the operation there were firefights between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian fighters. The suspect was arrested for “violation of orders and applicable rules”. The incident will be “investigated and dealt with appropriately,” it stressed.
Man injured in hand and leg by gunfire
It is still unclear what the man was accused of. The Israeli military said he was later transferred to the Palestinian Red Crescent for treatment. Paramedics identified him as 24-year-old Mujahid Raed Abbadi from the refugee city of Jenin. He was being treated at Ibn Sina Hospital in Jenin, doctors working there confirmed.
At the hospital, Abbadi said he was shot in the hand and leg as he left his uncle’s house in the city of Burkin in western Jenin. He then lay behind an Israeli military vehicle for more than two hours without rescuers or paramedics being able to reach him.
Doctor: 24-year-old suffered burns from hot hood
After Israeli soldiers became aware of him, they kicked him, punched him in the face and hit his injured leg and hand, Abbadi said. The soldiers first threw him “on the ground” and then tied him to the hood of the jeep. An attending physician said the 24-year-old suffered burns all over his back from the heat of the hood.
Jenin has long been a stronghold of Palestinian militant groups, including Hamas and Islamic Jihad. There and in the refugee settlement of the same name, Israeli security forces regularly raid. Violence has continued to escalate in the Israeli-occupied West Bank since the start of the war in the Gaza Strip against the radical Islamist group Hamas.
