The approaching heat wave and the high risk of severe weather are causing alarm bells to ring among experts again, but now when it comes to power outages: a large-scale power outage in the Balkans last week was probably a harbinger of a ‘hot’ season.
Air conditioning shocks, severe weather conditions and Russian threats also cast their shadow on the domestic power grid. Last weekend there was a supra-regional power outage in the Balkans, which was also confirmed by the European transmission system operators as a so-called blackout. With an average duration of only two hours, this is not a major problem, but in terms of supply it is probably a harbinger of a ‘hot summer’.
At least that’s what Herbert Saurugg, president of the Society for Crisis Prevention, thinks: “Last Friday we experienced only the third blackout in the international network system in Central Europe. Fortunately, there were no serious consequences due to the short duration.”
Arguing about possible danger
However, it has once again become apparent that there is no 100% certainty in the event of a total power failure. Rising temperatures and extreme weather conditions also put the stability of the system to the test. Recently, a storm destroyed seventeen lattice pylons in the transmission network in eastern Germany.
But the domestic Austrian electricity grid, after all the operator of the supra-regional electricity grid, sees no danger from a ‘current perspective’: ‘Regional power outages can of course occur again and again, but we cannot currently identify an increased risk of power outages. .”
Expert Saurugg answers: “Blackouts always result from a series of unfortunate individual events, and that cannot be ruled out.” Coming heat waves, storms and poorly developed power grids are unlikely to reduce the potential danger
