After three months at home, Bauer played cowboy-forest calf “Lore”.

Date:

The calf escaped in early April and has been wandering around the Vienna Forest ever since. Now “Lore” has returned – albeit only after some persuasion from her owner.

While the “hunt” for the unruly cattle in the Waldviertel is still not bearing fruit, farmer Markus Poyer from Ried am Riederberg, Tulln district, can breathe a sigh of relief: after almost free months in the wild, the escaped calf “Lore” has now been captured with an animal-friendly train trap.

He trotted from the meadow into the Vienna Forest
That the young animal remained intact after such a long time in the open air is nothing short of a miracle. “We were just driving some cows into the pasture when our young boy suddenly left the herd and ran straight into the forest,” the 41-year-old farmer passionately recalls the evening of April 3.

Authorities urged Bauer to shoot it
The first attempts to capture her failed, and the hope that “Lore” would return in the dark, attracted by the screams of the mother cow, was also disappointed. The organic farmer, with the help of friends and family, combed the nearby Vienna Forest for days – in vain. Curious: hikers discovered a ‘wild cow’ in the forest, which was even captured. But it wasn’t ‘Lore’.

While the authorities were already insisting that the four-legged friend be shot, there was now talk of a “happy ending”.
