A 46-year-old ski tourer has been buried under an avalanche in Tyrol’s Pitz Valley since Christmas, and numerous searches have been unsuccessful. Now, six months after the tragic accident, the local man’s body has been found.
Since Tuesday morning, exactly 186 days after the terrible accident, it has been a sad certainty. The Innerpitztal mountain rescue service discovered the body of the 46-year-old local resident in the huge avalanche that started on December 23 from the Rofelewand (3353 meters) near Piösmes (municipality of St. Leonhard im Pitztal) towards Rappenkopf. The Tyrolean dragonfly flew the corpse into the valley.
Found skis at the end of May
The victim’s touring skis had already been found at the end of May. However, the enormous amounts of snow in the area of the 2,320 meter high Rappenkopf had not yet freed the victim himself.
Only the melting snow in combination with the high temperatures of the past few days made it possible to find the 46-year-old.
