A pedestrian raised the alarm in Zirl near Innsbruck on Saturday afternoon. While walking, the man discovered a fire in the barn of a family home. Initial attempts to extinguish the fire had fatal consequences for the homeowner’s 34-year-old son-in-law.
It was around 4:30 p.m. when a passerby rang the storm bell at the home of a 58-year-old. A fire had started in the shed directly adjacent to the residential building. The homeowner’s son-in-law and the pedestrian tried to put out the fire with buckets of water. They managed to bring a moped to safety. During the operation, the 34-year-old man suffered severe burns to his hands and face.
But the two men could do little against the flames. The barn was already ablaze. Fortunately, firefighters prevented the flames from spreading to the home.
Significant property damage, cause unclear
According to the police, the damage to the facade of the house and the destroyed barn is considerable. The cause of the fire was initially unclear. The 34-year-old and the pedestrian were taken to the hospital in Halle. Both may have also inhaled smoke.
