Missiles on Ukraine – Scholz: ‘Putin is wrong, we are not weak’

Date:

“Rocket terror”, “desperate act”, “scorched earth”: German Chancellor Olaf Scholz condemned Putin’s drone and missile war in Ukraine on Thursday in no uncertain terms in the Bundestag. “Putin wants to sow fear, divide and intimidate. He speculates about our weakness. But he’s wrong. We are not weak. Putin will not achieve his war goals,” Scholz said.

After the recent drone and missile strikes on civilian targets in Ukraine, Scholz accused Russia of using “scorched earth tactics”. Scholz said in a government statement in the German Bundestag that she would not help Russia win the war either. “It only strengthens the determination and perseverance of Ukraine and its partners.”

“Germany stands together, Europe stands together”
“Ultimately, Russia’s bomb and missile terror is an act of desperation — as is the mobilization of Russian men for war,” Scholz continued. Putin covers Ukraine with terror and blatantly and irresponsibly threatens the use of nuclear weapons. Germany stands together, Europe stands together, Scholz added. “Our global alliances are stronger and more vibrant than ever. Putin will not achieve his war goals.”

Scholz declares over German dependence on Russian gas
Scholz declared Germany’s dependence on Russian gas over and promised again that the heat supply would be assured in the winter. He also reiterated that the state will protect consumers and businesses from being overburdened by high energy prices. “Nobody, no family, no retiree, no student and no business should fear being overwhelmed by the prices of electricity, gas or district heating.”

Focus on other gas consumers such as Japan and Korea
The EU must work closely with other gas consumers such as Japan and Korea “so that we do not compete with each other”. At the same time, a reasonable price should also be discussed with the producers. “I am convinced that countries like the US, Canada and Norway, which support us in solidarity with Ukraine, have an interest in ensuring that energy in Europe does not become unaffordable,” he said.

Scholz: Germany will train 5,000 Ukrainian soldiers
Scholz promised Ukraine support again for as long as it was needed. Germany will train a full Ukrainian brigade with up to 5,000 soldiers by spring. “We underline our willingness to participate in the long-term development of a strong Ukrainian armed forces – hand in hand with our partners,” Scholz said. He pointed out that on Monday EU foreign ministers had agreed on a new training mission for about 15,000 Ukrainian soldiers. One of the two headquarters for this will be in Germany.
