US presidential candidate Donald Trump has presented a peace plan for Ukraine. Accordingly, the White House may only supply weapons if the Ukrainian government engages in peace talks.
However, there should be more support if the Kremlin refuses to agree to negotiations. Ukraine’s possible NATO membership should be postponed for a longer period. Behind this strategy are retired Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg and Fred Fleitz, who served on the National Security Council during the Trump presidency. The article was published by the America First Policy Institute, a pro-Trump think tank where Kellogg and Fleitz hold senior positions.
No surrender of territory
“We say to the Ukrainians: ‘You must come to the table. And if you don’t come to the table, American support will dry up,” Kellogg said. They will say to Putin: “If you don’t come to the table, we will give the Ukrainians everything they need to kill you on the battlefield.”
The war must be frozen during negotiations along the front lines. But Ukraine does not need to cede any territory to Russia, Fleitz said. Lasting peace would require additional security guarantees. Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podoljak described the part of the front line as “strange”. “Peace can only be fair and established on the basis of international law.”
Most detailed suggestion yet
The plan is the Trump camp’s most detailed proposal yet on how to proceed in the war between Ukraine and Russia. Trump himself has repeatedly stated that he could quickly resolve the conflict if he wins the election against President Joe Biden on November 5 (see video above). However, he has not yet said how he plans to achieve this. According to Fleitz and Kellogg, he responded positively to the new proposal. “I’m not saying he agreed with every word, but we were happy with the feedback we got.”
The Russian government said any proposal must reflect the reality on the ground so that President Vladimir Putin is ready to negotiate. He demands not only the abandonment of NATO ambitions, but also the surrender of four Ukrainian regions.
Russian Defense Minister Andrei Beloussov and his American counterpart Lloyd Austin spoke by telephone on Tuesday about the situation in Ukraine. The Kremlin has strongly criticized the White House for its continued support for the war-torn country. On Monday, “consequences” were threatened after a US missile killed four people on the Crimean peninsula.
