After heavy rainfall in recent days, Lake Garda has reached its highest level in 47 years. In one day, levels rose by four inches, Garda chief Pierlucio Ceresa said.
“That corresponds to a water volume of 50 million cubic meters (…). The situation was managed sensibly, with exceptional discharges from the Mincio River.” Currently the level is 146 centimeters above hydrometric zero in Peschiera, almost one meter more than a year ago.
There is no problem for tourism, Ceresa assured. All beaches are open and shipping is regular. According to him, the extraordinary outflows have been going on for a month – they would guarantee that “there will be no major inconvenience”.
The bad weather continues
However, the start of the summer season has so far disappointed many tourism professionals in the area. Numerous holidaymakers fled the persistent rain and shortened their stay. The beaches are currently empty and lido operators are concerned about their income.
The bad weather in the region continues. This year, more rain fell in less than six months than in the entire year of 2022. The tourism sector is now hoping for more stable weather in July.
