Crash during descent – European Championship thriller missed: Heli brought injured people off the mountain

Date:

When the Austrian Euro heroes delivered the final blow in the match against the Netherlands on Tuesday, mountain rescuers and the crew of the emergency medical helicopter “Martin 3” in Steinbach am Attersee were extremely concentrated: an alpinist fell during the descent from the Schoberstein and had to be rescued with a rope.

When the accident happened around 7 p.m. on Tuesday, victory for the Austrian national team was already within reach: “The woman tripped while descending the steep terrain and fell forward on her head,” said Christian Palle from Martin Air Rescue. Mountain rescuers from Steinbach am Attersee quickly climbed to her side, but due to the severity of the injury and the steepness of the terrain, they ultimately decided on a helicopter rescue using a rope.

Palle himself hung on the rope under the red rescue helicopter to save the injured woman: “The most important thing in this case was not to waste time. We are talking about the so-called ‘Golden Hour’. If there is a trauma injury, the victim should be in the hospital within an hour. That is also the reason why the helicopter was deployed here,” explains the experienced air rescuer.

All clearly from the Salzkammergut clinic
The rescue was carried out extremely professionally by the helicopter crew’s emergency doctor and the mountain rescue team from Steinbach am Attersee met the victim on the ground. The woman was first treated in a large meadow next to Weißenbacher Straße (B153) and later taken to the Salzkammergut clinic in Vöcklabruck by helicopter “Martin 3”. From that moment on it quickly became clear: the young woman did not sustain any serious injuries.

At least three missions per day, more than 1,000 per year
The crew of the rescue helicopter stationed in Scharnstein in the Gmunden district is currently in high demand: This year they have already completed 500 missions, and during the year this will be more than 1,100, the air rescuer says in an interview with the “crown”. The scope is wide, Palle adds: “Everything is included, from pediatric emergencies to heart attacks or alpine operations like this.”

The strategic base in the Almtal is managed by the Salzburg entrepreneur Roy Knaus. The current base has existed in its current structure since July 2017. In Austria, a total of eight air rescue bases are active in four states (Upper Austria, Lower Austria, Salzburg and Tyrol), the headquarters are located in St. Johann im Pongau.
