An Austrian man died early Wednesday afternoon during a mountain hike in South Tyrol. The 49-year-old, who was traveling with his wife, apparently slipped during the descent and fell 70 meters over rocky terrain. He probably died instantly.
The man was on a mountain tour with his wife in the Gaisjochspitze area in Meransen in the municipality of Mühlbach in South Tyrol on Wednesday afternoon when the dramatic accident occurred. The 49-year-old slipped while descending the southern ridge and fell into the depths.

The woman then alerted emergency services, it was said. The Pelikan 2 emergency medical helicopter and mountain rescuers were present. According to reports, the helicopter was initially unable to reach the alpinist due to fog, but only succeeded after half an hour. All help came too late and the 49-year-old probably died on the spot.
The man’s body was recovered using a winch. The woman was arrested and received psychological care.
