A bizarre case occurred at the cemetery in Stockerau (Lower Austria) in March: a 59-year-old is accused of digging up the urn of his ex-wife. The man was drunk and was filmed by an acquaintance who wanted to blackmail him.
As the Niederösterreichische Nachrichten reported, the 59-year-old’s relationship with his boyfriend (51) may have been difficult. The Public Prosecution Service speaks of a “history of physical injury.” His acquaintance wanted to blackmail him with the video showing the man digging up the urn. However, that didn’t happen.
A few days after the crime, the gravedigger had scruples and reported himself to the police. Both men were drunk when the incident occurred. The Public Prosecution Service is now investigating allegations of disturbing the peace of the dead and, in the case of the 51-year-old, coercion.
There is a risk of a prison sentence of up to six months
It is unclear at this time whether the incident will be heard in court. Disturbing the peace of the dead is regulated in this country by the Criminal Code and can result in a prison sentence of up to six months.
