Emergency abortions remain allowed in the US state of Idaho. The US Supreme Court decided this on Thursday. Hospital staff had complained because abortions were not allowed if the pregnant woman’s well-being was at risk.
The only exception to the ban was a life threat. According to the US government under Joe Biden, state hospitals are required to perform abortions in all medical emergencies. Based on this, staff have taken legal action against the law and in some cases obtained relaxation of the law. Representatives of the US state of Idaho then contacted the Supreme Court, which denied their request on Thursday.
This means that abortions can be performed even when the well-being of the pregnant woman is at risk. However, the question of legality has not yet been definitively clarified. The ban itself could end up in the Supreme Court again.
White House satisfied
Still, the White House was satisfied. “No woman should be denied medical care until she is near death or forced to leave her home state. But that is exactly what is happening across the country,” spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said. Abortion is illegal in about half of the U.S. states and legal in the others.
Nearly two years ago, the Supreme Court struck down the country’s 50-year-old right to abortion. Since then, state legislatures have been able to make their own rules on whether and under what conditions abortions are permitted.
