“Free tickets” distributed – Red Cross gives tips for the warm weekend

Date:

The renowned Red Cross aid organization trained employees to provide valuable tips on heat, especially to seniors and people at risk.

While many people, especially children in eastern Austria, enjoy a summer holiday in the sun, it can be dangerous for others. In light of the current “temperature threat,” the Red Cross has begun training all of its employees – from volunteers to full-time employees to those doing community service – to become so-called heat coaches.

Pay special attention to vulnerable people and the elderly
“Our goal is to specifically target older and vulnerable groups – including children,” says Hans Ebner, President of the Red Cross in Lower Austria, “whether it means meals on wheels and eating at home, or with our patients at the emergency services, at senior meetings or at the distribution points of Team Austria Tafel.” Important tips were summarized on special cards. These “free cards” are distributed by Red Cross employees.

What applies to seniors should also be observed by everyone when they are out and about or working outside. “The most important thing is to follow the three basic rules. Firstly, never forget to cover your head, secondly, drink enough (non-alcoholic) drinks and thirdly: do not lie in the blazing sun,” is the advice of chief physician Dr. Bernd Schreiner. This is the only way to prevent sunstroke, sunburn or dangerous dehydration.

Sunscreen to protect against skin cancer!
It is also important to use a sunscreen with a high sun protection factor, as most skin cancers are caused by intense sunlight.

And: Anyone can become a heat coach, for example if he asks his neighbors how they deal with the heat – and whether support is needed.
