According to health authorities, the hot summer in France last year cost more than 5,000 lives. Between June 1 and September 15, more than three percent of all deaths were related to the heat, authorities said in Paris on Thursday. During the four heat waves last summer alone, there were approximately 1,500 weather-related deaths.
More than ten percent of all deaths in these periods were heat-related. Three-quarters of all summer heat deaths were aged 75 or older. Eleven fatal industrial accidents were also related to the heat.
Due to the high temperatures in France last summer, more than 20,000 people required emergency medical care and more than 10,000 people were hospitalized. This record confirms the need for preventive measures across the country and a strengthened climate change adaptation strategy to reduce the impact of heat on the health of French people, authorities said. For example, the city of Paris is working on concepts to combat the expected peak temperatures of up to 50 degrees in the metropolis in 2050.
