Situation treacherous – After a horror day: warning from the Tyrolean mountain rescue service

Date:

On Thursday, the still delicate conditions in the Tyrolean mountains were fatal for two alpinists due to the old snow. The Tyrolean mountain rescue service is concerned about the conditions before the weekend.

In the Zillertal Alps, a local man (68) fell to his death while descending the Großer Möseler. The man slipped on a snow-covered rock slab. Also in the morning, a snow field on a hiking trail below the Ramolhaus in the Ötztal was fatal for a German (65).

Still a lot of snow at high altitudes
“At high altitudes – especially on the north side – there is even more snow at the end of June than in other years,” says Gregor Franke of the Tyrolean Mountain Rescue Service. “The snowfields are still quite hard, especially in the morning, so without Grödel or crampons and alpine experience you should avoid them,” emphasizes the experienced mountain rescuer. Anyone who has doubts or feels unsafe should definitely come back. Franke also says this looking ahead to the weekend.

Tour planning is essential for survival
He himself recently took part in a typical rescue mission of these weeks by the Libelle Tirol police helicopter near Sillian. Franke: “Two inexperienced hikers on the Carnic High Trail had crossed a very steep snowfield during the climb to the Humility Summit. At the top they did not dare to go any further because of the old snow and sounded the alarm.” The dragonfly flew into the valley in pairs. “You simply cannot go into the mountains without a well-founded travel plan,” Franke warns.
