Counter-demonstration: 30 ads – the police take stock of the Vienna rainbow parade

A total of 250,000 people took part in the 26th edition of the Vienna Rainbow Parade, which marched along the Ring. At the same time, a counter-demonstration “March of the Family” took place, with a total of 30 reports coming in, according to the police. A policewoman suffered a cut to her head, among other things, after she was hit by a glass bottle.

About 200 participants of the Christian fundamentalists “March of the Family” on the Stephansplatz are said to have taken part in the protest action at 2 p.m. This group has been taking a stand against abortion and same-sex marriage for years. Of the complaints, 24 were for criminal offenses and six for administrative offences.

Pepper spray insert
Also on the Stephansplatz, the police used pepper spray after no protection zones within a radius of 50 meters were stopped, despite repeated requests. At the same time, left-wing activists responded to the right-wing movement by saying, “Shut up.” The counter-demonstration was ended by police at 3 p.m.

According to the police, there were no further incidents at the Vienna Pride 2022 itself.

About 250,000 participants marched for five hours along the Ring to champion the rights of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgenders, intersex and queers.

Organizer Katharina Kacerovsky-Strobl called the rainbow parade a “wonderful sign of life for the LGBTIQ community”.
