According to authorities, a border guard in Ukraine was attacked by two men with a machete. The border guard then shot at the two, fatally wounding one of them. The second was injured.
The incident took place Saturday night in the western Ukrainian region of Chernivtsi (Chernivtsi), the news portal “Ukrainskaya Pravda” reported on Sunday, citing border guards and authorities.
Initially, nothing was known about the background and objectives of the attackers. During the course of the war, men of military age repeatedly tried to leave the country to avoid being called up to the front.
Conscripts were caught fleeing to Hungary
Earlier, seventeen men were arrested at the border with Hungary who, according to the authorities, wanted to leave Ukraine illegally. A minivan carrying its occupants was stopped 200 meters from the border crossing, the border guard said on Sunday. The men came from different regions of Ukraine and wanted to flee to Hungary. According to the information, the men have to pay between 300 dollars (about 2,800 euros) and 12,000 dollars (about 11,200 euros) to leave the country.
Ukraine has been defending itself against the Russian invasion for more than two years, declaring martial law and ordering mobilization. Since then, men between the ages of 18 and 60 have been able to leave the war-torn country only in exceptional cases.
