It should have been a summer like it used to be, namely before Corona. People are allowed to travel to most countries again, there are hardly any restrictions. And yet air traffic in particular is currently a very special challenge.
Hours of delay and too little food and drink on the planes are currently causing a stir, and not just on social media. There are also unforeseen events, such as the kerosene bottleneck after a refinery accident just outside Vienna (we reported). But as a holidaymaker, should you be afraid that the summer holiday will end in chaos? The “Krone” asked.
“65 to 70 percent occupancy”
Peter Kleemann, spokesman for Vienna-Schwechat Airport, also sees it this way: “The biggest problem is the lack of workers at many other airports. We don’t have that problem, we are prepared for the summer, even though it will be much busier at the airport than now. Because at the moment we are only at 65 to 70 percent occupancy”, he also emphasizes.
Small airport, big advantage
At Linz airport, people even see themselves as an advantage: “The good news is that classic direct-flying holiday airlines are virtually unaffected,” says General Manager Norbert Draskovits, encouraging holidaymakers. However, if you have to switch, there is a risk of problems. “Because there are huge problems at the major hubs, such as Frankfurt, which often lead to delays of hours,” says Draskovits.
And the airport boss of Linz also has a few tips for travelers: “You have to be at the airport earlier. Take the opportunity to check in yourself and, if possible, drop off your luggage a day before departure.”
prices will rise
For aviation expert Kurt Hofmann, many problems in the industry are homemade. “Airlines have sold devices like the AUA. Lufthansa and Swissair also have fewer planes,” he says. In addition, there are personnel problems in all areas.
“Easy-Jet, for example, has a flight attendant less on the Airbus due to personnel problems. That means you can also take fewer passengers with you.” But if you want to fly cheaply, you should do it now, because Hofmann expects that the prices for flights will rise significantly in the winter at the latest.
