On Monday, 325 passengers of Air Europa experienced a nightmare. The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner was en route from Madrid to Montevideo when it was hit by severe turbulence. Videos and images show damaged ceiling panels, smashed seats and injured people lying on the floor. One man even had to be rescued from the overhead bin!
Video shows other passengers pulling a man from the carry-on compartment after he was thrown there by the force of the turbulence.
The pilot was able to land ‘normally’ in Natal (Brazil), Spanish airline Air Europa announced on X (see tweet below). All injured received medical treatment and care.
Passengers receive medical attention after emergency landing
According to the G1 news portal, which cites the city’s emergency services, there were 30 to 40 passengers of different nationalities who required medical attention and some of them had to be taken to hospitals.
Those affected suffered head injuries, fractures of the cervical vertebrae and facial injuries and also complained of chest pain.
Another plane must now take the passengers stranded in Natal to their actual destination.
The turbulence in May claimed lives
Just over a month ago, there was turbulence on a Singapore Airlines flight from London to Singapore, which even claimed one life (73). At that time, more than twenty passengers had to go to intensive care due to head or brain injuries (see link to article below).
Severe turbulence in aviation is expected to increase. Extremely “bumpy” flights could even triple as a result of climate change.
