Noah (9) suffers from cystic fibrosis and needs 24-hour care from his mother – but she is currently desperate. Because she always has to deal with offices and institutions. Currently, for example, at the Employment Service (AMS) in Linz (Upper Austria).
Anyone who meets Noah for the first time sees a smart, mischievous-looking nine-year-old boy. What you don’t see is that Noah has been fighting for his life since birth. The man from Linz suffers from cystic fibrosis, a congenital metabolic disease in which thick mucus forms in the cells and gradually clogs vital organs. The disease determines the lives of Noah and his mother Evelin S. (39). The single mother is on duty 24 hours a day: she has to bring Noah in because he has difficulty digesting solid food, train with him, attend therapy and take him to the hospital again and again. When Noah is at school, she has to organize everything. This makes it impossible for the 39-year-old to keep a job.
Mother feels pressured
But even more stressful for them is the battle with authorities and institutions. “I currently feel pressured by the AMS to sign a document stating that I do not consider myself employable. But if I sign this, I will not receive any support from the social services,” the woman fears. “I am afraid that I will run out of money.” For the time being, no one wants or can take away her fear.
Huge burden
The AMS says that you only need the transcript to make a notification. But you must comply with the applicable laws. Evelin S. is supported by Margreth Tews. The mediator knows that this is not an isolated case. “It happens very often that people – especially women – who have already reached their limits, have to argue with the authorities.” Evelin S. has already experienced how hard life is as a caring mother. She ended up in a burnout and has still not fully recovered.
There are people to whom fate is not kind. But what unites many people is that they not only accept it, but fight it. A fair number of them are mainly single women (that does not match my peers) who sacrificially care for their sick or disabled children.
It is hard to understand that these women are sent to Pilate by an excessive bureaucracy of Pontius and have to act as petitioners. Despite all the understanding of rules and laws, humanity must not be neglected.
