Numerous bright yellow frogs have caused a stir in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The Asian bullfrogs suddenly appeared in partially submerged fields after heavy rain.
Locals reported that it was ‘raining’ frogs. The solution to the puzzle: The males of this frog species change from green-brown with dark spots to lemon yellow during mating season. This is to attract females.
Males change color during the mating season
Normally, the bodies of amphibians are olive green or brownish in color with dark spots – that is why they are also called tiger frogs. During the mating season, the color changes to bright yellow and the animals’ sound bladders (pictured below) turn blue.
Asian bullfrogs can grow up to 17 centimetres long, making them the largest frog species found in India. In addition to India, the animals are also found in mainland Myanmar, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nepal.
