Loot worth more than a million euros would simply “melt away” – but the Viennese researchers arrived just in time. Duo in custody!
Breathe a sigh of relief from an art lover in the federal capital: Just two weeks ago, previously unknown criminals invaded her studio in Vienna’s Leopoldstadt – and made off with seven bronze reliefs and sculptures stored here. Estimated total value of the works of art by the Greek-Austrian sculptor Joannis Avramidis, who died in 2016: over a million euros.
Thieves sold works of art for several thousand euros
Curious: on the one hand, the perpetrators must be prepared – the pieces together weighed more than a ton! In other words, the transport must be arranged. On the other hand, they apparently had no idea how valuable their prey was. Or didn’t know where to turn it into money. Because investigators from the National Criminal Investigation Department (Urbanz group) revealed that the suspects had sold the works to a recycling company for only a few thousand euros.
And the detectives arrived just in time: the buyer was about to push the pieces he thought unimportant into the furnace. The suspected art thieves (two Romanians, 37 and 41) dived into the manhunt network in Vienna-Ottakring. And is in custody!
