On July 4, four people were bitten by the same shark in just two hours off the Texas beach resort of South Padre Island. Two men and two women were taken to hospitals with serious injuries.
Video footage from a beachgoer shows two sharks swimming near the shore where the attack occurred.
According to ABC Weslaco, game warden Chris Dowdy is convinced that only one of the animals attacked and was therefore responsible for all the attacks.
Beachgoers rescue shark victims
Around 11:00 a.m., a man was bitten in the leg and dragged to shore bleeding by other beachgoers. Another person was able to fend off the shark attack but suffered serious injuries.
Shortly after the first attack, another video appeared on the internet showing a woman being pulled into the shallow water by helpers after a shark attack with a calf bite. The woman was put on tourniquets to stop the bleeding. Another person with serious injuries was also rescued.
The US Coast Guard then searched the area with drones, boats and a helicopter. To protect beachgoers from further attacks, waterways are being monitored.
Sharks bite in search of food
Shark attacks are rare on the Texas coast, but not unheard of. “These types of shark encounters are not common in Texas,” authorities said in a statement. “When shark bites do occur, they are usually a case of mistaken identity.”
