The fire in a gas cylinder in Fieberbrunn in Tyrol led to a large-scale operation on Thursday afternoon by firefighters, rescue workers, police including helicopters and specialists in hazardous and explosive substances. Several families had to be evacuated.
The incident happened around 2:30 p.m. on a construction site. During burning operations, a gas cylinder caught fire. “Because it was initially unknown whether it was a gas cylinder filled with acetylene or propane gas, five houses in the danger zone and the construction site were evacuated,” the police said.
15 people were brought to safety. Firefighters from Fieberbrunn and St. Johann extinguished the fire and cooled the gas cylinder. Special police and fire brigades were deployed to clear up a possible explosion hazard.
Around 5:00 p.m. the signal was given. The evacuees were allowed to return to their homes. No one was injured in the incident.
