Tiergarten Schönbrunn – About 7780 animals can be admired in the zoo

Date:

Like every year, the entire animal population in the Schönbrunn Zoo is counted in the spring. About 7,780 individuals currently live in the zoo, ranging from insects to mammals. The most numerous are the vertebrates with 486 races and about 5810 individual animals. This also includes the declared favorites of visitors such as pandas, giraffes, polar bears, elephants and big cats.

In total, visitors to the zoo can marvel at 667 species and breeds. For most species, inventory is performed by keepers as part of their daily care work. Insects are roughly counted. In 2020, 696 species/races and 7599 individuals were identified.

920 bird species could be counted. The zoo has 202 different species of fish with 2,960 individual animals. Reptiles make it to 81 species with 670 animals. Amphibians are represented by 35 species and 440 animals. Invertebrates such as jellyfish, insects or corals currently number 1970 individuals of 181 species.

Fewer species and more space
The portfolio is always planned several years in advance. The primary goal is to create an attitude that inspires visitors to the animals and “at least meets all the needs of the species in question”. “Very roughly speaking, one can say that the trend is towards fewer species, more space and more communal attitudes,” it said.
