Mecaner workers urge to halt “dismantling” of factory

Date:

They have denounced that the Stellantis group has already started removing machinery from the factory, with the aim of “closing Mecaner and selling the factory to everyone and in pieces”, while the Basque government “looks the other way”.

Workers of the Mecaner company, who are committed to the reconversion of this factory, asked the Basque government this Friday to stop the sale of machines and called on the union of social agents, citizens and trade unions to “stop this dismantling”.

This is what they expressed in a note after denouncing that the Stellantis group has already begun to remove machinery from the factory, with the aim of “closing Mecaner and selling the factory to everyone and in pieces”, while the Basque government “looks the other way.”

In the same way, they have asked the autonomous executive power and the rest of the competent administrations to facilitate the “transitional government purchase” of these facilities.

After the closure of the factory, the former employees of this company have chosen to reopen the Mecaner facilities with sustainable industrial activity, so that it becomes a “reference” for the eco-social transformation of the industry.

They have also defended the need to initiate a ‘participatory process’ that allows former workers, trade unions, institutions and social movements to decide and propose ‘what, how and who they are going to produce’.

Mecaner, a company based in Urduliz, completed the process of laying off its entire workforce of 144 employees last May.
