Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico appeared in public for the first time since the assassination attempt on his life, criticizing a “liberal ideology” and praising Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orbán for his trip to Moscow.
“If I had been healthy, I would have joined him,” he even said. There “can never be enough peace initiatives,” “without peace, everything is nothing.” According to Fico, he admires Orban for traveling to both Kiev and Moscow to meet with presidents Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin, respectively. The Slovak prime minister is known for his close ties with the Russian ruler (see video above).
There was also approval from the AfD party in Germany: “Hungary is moving forward and is talking to both direct parties to the conflict on the first day of its EU Council presidency. (…) The AfD faction welcomes the fact that the possibilities of an early ceasefire with the aim of peace talks are now being prioritized at the highest European level,” foreign policy spokesman Matthias Moosdorf said.
US government concerned
However, the White House said it was “concerned.” Orbán’s behavior is counterproductive and does not contribute to peace, spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said. “Russia could end this war today by abandoning its attack on Ukraine, its sovereignty and its democracy.” EU politicians had also sharply criticized the meeting with Putin.
The Hungarian prime minister himself speaks of a peace mission. He was in Ukraine for the first time since the beginning of the war and met with Zelensky on Tuesday. The meeting with Putin took place in Moscow on Friday.
