Wild social media brawls escalated Saturday night in the supposedly peaceful Anton Kummerer Park in Vienna-Brigittenau. The duel was between Syrians and Chechens, resulting in a fierce firefight, in which three people were injured and real chaos ensued. Neighbors are in shock!
“What happened to our neighborhood, now we will soon be in Favoriten”, was the opinion on Treustraße during the local inspection of the “Krone”. On Saturday evening, a gang escalated among foreigners in Brigittenau. Syrians (between 15 and 21 years old) and Chechens attacked each other with wooden slats, pepper spray, knives and even firearms.
Numerous neighbors alerted the police and during the large-scale operation that followed, several men were arrested in the vicinity of the crime scene. Three injured received emergency medical care from the Vienna Professional Rescue Service and some were taken to a hospital for outpatient care. The area resembled a battlefield.
“Get away from the window or they’ll shoot you.”
Neighbour and eyewitness Franz M. no longer understands the world after the exciting night: “It is usually quiet here, but yesterday there was a state of emergency. We heard the shots around 11:30 or a quarter past 11 at night. I said to my wife: get away from the window, otherwise they will shoot you. Then the police came.”
Other residents, however, speak of “continuing terror” in Grätzl. The Anton-Kummerer-Park is supposed to become a drug hub and people don’t dare to go out at night anyway. Then only the courtyard of the large buildings is used for walking dogs. “I don’t even dare to go out anymore, there are only riffraff around,” said another witness to the night of terror.
Cars riddled with multiple bullet holes
Five uninvolved car owners also came to kiss hands. Some of their cars were badly damaged. Several bullet holes paved the bodies. The desperation is great, who is going to pay for the damage now and where do I report this? The telephone lines are glowing.
The police investigation is in full swing
During the thorough police work, several suspected murder weapons were found and seized in the vicinity of the crime scene. Police spokeswoman Barbara Gass explains: “The Vienna State Criminal Investigation Department has taken over the investigation. The exact sequence of events, the exact number of suspects and the motives are the subject of ongoing investigations.”
Meanwhile, the stricken Grätzl is in shock in Brigittenau. The fear of further incidents is great…
