Hostage negotiations – Hamas backs down from central demand

Date:

Can another knot be untied in the hostage release negotiations? The radical Palestinian Islamist organization Hamas has apparently abandoned its call for a “complete and permanent ceasefire.”

A senior official said Sunday that Hamas’s demand that Israel agree to a “complete and permanent ceasefire” to begin talks on a hostage-for-prisoner exchange was “obsolete.”

US: “There is still a lot of work to be done”
The Hamas representative also said that mediators from the Gulf emirate of Qatar had promised “that the ceasefire will remain in effect for the duration of the negotiations.” On Friday, a senior US official said a new proposal from Hamas would move the process forward and could form the basis for reaching an agreement, although “important work” remains to be done.

Negotiations, which had been going on for months, had recently stalled. Hamas has so far demanded that Israel end the war immediately in exchange for the release of hostages. Israel, on the other hand, wants to keep open the possibility of continuing the war in order to destroy Hamas as a military formation and governing force in the Gaza Strip.

The war has been going on for ten months
The war between Israel and Hamas has been going on for ten months now. On October 7, fighters from Hamas and other Palestinian militant groups launched an unprecedented attack on Israel, which sparked the war in the Gaza Strip. According to Israeli information, around 1,200 people were brutally killed in the attack and 251 others were taken hostage to the Gaza Strip. In response to the attack, Israel has since launched a large-scale military operation in the Gaza Strip. According to figures released on Sunday by the Hamas-controlled Health Ministry, which cannot be independently verified, 38,150 people have been killed so far.
