The president of the World Medical Association, Frank Ulrich Montgomery, has warned of the spread of the ommicron subvariant BA.5 of the coronavirus in Germany. “Corona is not over yet – this is proven by the violent outbreak of omicron in Portugal,” said Montgomery of the “Rheinische Post”. BA.5 will also spread in Germany.
Many people – including those who have been vaccinated – would get sick. The German radiologist told the German daily that vaccinated people had significantly milder symptoms. “The smarter we behave now, the less drastic measures we need in the fall and winter. Wear a mask voluntarily where many people gather. Vaccination, now more than ever! And don’t trade freedom for safety,” demanded Montgomery.
The Robert Koch Institute recently reported a low-level increase in ommicron subvariants BA.4 and BA.5. BA.2 continues to dominate at 96.4 percent. However, the BA.5 share has recently doubled from 1.2 to about 2.5 percent.
The German health minister, Karl Lauterbach, had also issued a warning. “The highly contagious variant BA.4/BA.5 is also emerging here. This could be the next wave in the fall,” the SPD politician wrote on Twitter.
