The current Prime Minister, Gabriel Attal, has announced that he will step down from office this Monday.
The New Popular Front (NFP), made up of rebels, socialists, environmentalists and communists, which won the French elections and stop the far rightdemoted to third place, wants this week to nominate a candidate for prime minister so that he is appointed and governs with his own program and not in coalition with the outgoing majority of the president, Emmanuel Macron.
France decided in elections this Sunday to overthrow the National Assembly, which removed the far right from power and opened the doors to different scenarioswithout clarity on the figure of the future prime minister. And the governability of France is entering a very uncertain phase, especially in a country without a tradition of coalitions or alliances.
French President Emmanuel Macron will “wait” for the formation of the new parliament after the second round of parliamentary elections to “adopt the necessary decisions”, after the New Popular Front won the election.
“In accordance with republican tradition, he will wait for the structuring of the new National Assembly to take the necessary decisions,” said the Elysée, which stressed that “the President, in his role as guarantor of the institutions, will ensure that the sovereign choice of the French people is respected.”
The power to appoint a new Prime Minister belongs to the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, and the main leaders of the NFP, as Mélenchon and the Socialist Secretary General Olivier Faure have already claimed that this attribution albeit for someone from the left-wing coalition. The current prime minister, the macronist Gabriel Attal, for his part, has already announced that he will present his resignation to the president this Monday.
“This week we must be able to prepare a candidacy,” stressed the first secretary of the Socialist Party (PS) on Monday, Olivier Fauréwho has insisted that Macron must acknowledge that “he has been defeated” in the parliamentary elections of June 30 and July 7.
In an interview with the station France InfoFaure declined to comment on who could become prime minister, other than to rule out the leader of La Francia Insumisa (LFI), Jean-Luc Melenchonand to point out that he “will have to be able to engage in dialogue with the outside world”, because the relative majority of the New Popular Front (NFP) will have to be “expanded”.
For the Socialist leader, “the Macronist camp must show responsibility” and say whether they are prepared to cast their vote with the RN in the future to overthrow an NFP government with a motion of censure.
The deputy of France Insoumise (LFI) Manuel Bompard has stressed that there will be “losers” in next Sunday’s vote: “Macronism and Marine Le Pen’s National Rally” (RN), while the NFP is “the first political formation of the National Assembly, which must govern”.
He confirmed that today the discussions between the left-wing coalition formations will continue They will propose “a method and a name” from the Prime Minister to implement his programme, because “we must respect the word we have given to the voters.
The leader of the Ecologists, Marine Tondelierhas insisted that Macron “should officially call the NFP today to give him the name of a prime minister.”
