A 28-year-old Australian man is being investigated for multiple murders after he was accused of obstructing rescue workers as they tried to pull his children from the family’s burning home.
According to the police, the seven children of the 28-year-old and their mother were in the family home at the time of the fire. Three children, aged 10 months, 3 and 6 years, died in the fire on Sunday. The four other children, aged between 4 and 11 years old, and their 29-year-old mother were taken to hospital, the police said. They suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Prime Minister: “Terrible and senseless act”
It was a “horrific and senseless act” that would leave a “deep wound” in the province of New South Wales, New South Wales Premier Chris Minns said on Monday. For his part, Chief Homicide Officer Danny Doherty said of the arrested man: “The 28-year-old appears to be responsible for a number of deaths.”
Doherty said he prevented emergency responders from entering the burning building and “acted with the intent to keep children inside during the fire.” Police said the suspect was arrested for his own injuries and placed in a medically induced coma. He is being treated in hospital under police observation.
