As reported, ten women have accused Magna founder Frank Stronach of sexual abuse or attempted rape. The cases date back to 1977 and have landed the 91-year-old on multiple charges in Canada. The billionaire is set to appear in court for the first time on Monday. Now the evidence is in.
According to court documents, the 91-year-old is accused of several crimes, including attempted rape, sexual assault and false imprisonment. Stronach denies all the allegations. A jury trial is unlikely to take at least a year.
Stronach will not have to respond to the charges during Monday’s hearing, Thomas Daigle, a reporter for Canada’s state television channel CBC, told the Ö1 Morgenjournal.
Author describes “bizarre experience” with Stronach
According to the indictment, some of the incidents took place in Toronto, and others also took place in the Canadian city of Aurora, where Stronach’s former company, Magna International, is headquartered. The billionaire also allegedly committed sexual assaults against women in the spring of 2023.
New York author Jane Boon reported on ORF radio about a “bizarre experience” with Stronach. The then 19-year-old student met the billionaire in the 1980s through her university’s partnership with Magna. The then 54-year-old invited her over several times, her wine glass was always full at a manager’s meeting and Stronach insisted she stay at his guest house.
Advice from secretaries: “Don’t go near the boarding house”
That evening, sexual acts took place between the student and the former CEO of Magna. “His concerns about my driving ability did not extend to the bedroom,” Boon wrote in the Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail at the end of June.
It was a disturbing and unpleasant experience: “It wasn’t rape, but it was an abuse of power, it was exploitation and it was wrong.” After Boon reported her experiences in the Canadian newspaper, other women who worked at Magna came forward.
“The boarding house was apparently legendary. There was some kind of whispering network,” Boon reported on ORF radio. “Experienced secretaries would take new employees aside and tell them, ‘Don’t go anywhere near this boarding house.'”
