Doctors warn: First we sweat, then we are threatened with heavy storms

Date:

Summer has us completely under control. Especially in the east, temperatures are gradually rising to 37 degrees this week. The unpleasant result: countless tropical nights – and also heavy storms with hail, torrential rain and hurricane winds.

In meteorology, when something is considered “relatively certain,” it usually means there is a threat of disaster. That’s true this week, with the chance of severe weather increasing significantly across the country heading into the weekend. But all is well: After clouds kept most of the heat at bay yesterday, the entire country is enjoying mostly cloudless, beautiful summer weather today.

Keep an eye on the sky from Wednesday
According to Ubimet weatherman Michele Salmi, things will get exciting from a meteorological point of view in the middle of the week. A cold front is approaching us from the west, where thunderstorms are expected as early as Wednesday morning, including strong ones in Vorarlberg and Tyrol. Towards evening they will spread over the north and the mountains – hail and storms are expected.

Hail, hurricane and flooding in the west
Although the same duel will probably repeat itself on Thursday, temperatures in the Far East are constantly rising. In Vienna and the surrounding area, they could reach 37 degrees on Friday. The accumulated heat will only be released in the west and north on Friday with, according to Salmi, ‘very heavy thunderstorms’. In the north of Tyrol, Salzburg and Upper Austria, the warning is in effect for hail, hurricane force and torrential rain.

Tropical nights and risk of severe weather in the east
Saturday, the situation calmed down in those parts of the country. Meanwhile, the east is burning with heat – from today’s perspective, the east and the south are also the focus of huge thunderstorm towers. If it does not cool down noticeably over the weekend, it looks like a long-term heat wave. The Viennese can now prepare for seven to eight tropical nights in a row.

The medical association advises you to be particularly careful
This heat can cause health problems for many people, warns the Vienna Medical Association. Older women and men, infants and small children, pregnant women and people with previous illnesses are particularly affected. The Vienna Medical Association therefore issued a warning and advised special caution.

“High temperatures can cause symptoms such as muscle pain and headaches, nausea, fatigue and increased heart rate. Serious circulatory problems and confusion can result, especially in older people – in such cases a doctor should be consulted as soon as possible,” Johannes Steinhart, president of the Austrian and Viennese Medical Association, said in a broadcast on Monday.
