350 passengers on a ferry were forced to spend 24 hours at sea after a fire broke out in the engine room of the “Tenacia” en route from Valencia to Palma de Mallorca.
Instead of reaching Mallorca on Monday morning, the passengers were distributed to replacement ships and taken back to the starting port in Valencia.
What happened: The car ferry left on Sunday evening, but shortly after midnight and halfway through the “Tenacia” had to stop because a fire had broken out in the engine room.
Initial attempts were made to fight the fire using on-board equipment, but the flames could not be completely extinguished.
Evacuation of ship ordered
According to Bild, the captain finally gave the order to evacuate the ship on Monday afternoon. Firefighters were flown in by helicopter, passengers had to leave the ferry through a rescue tube and slide to the lifeboats.
They were then taken back to Valencia, where the damaged ship was also towed, leaving behind the passengers’ cars and luggage.
The cause of the fire was initially unknown, but no one was injured.
