A man was arrested in Vienna on Tuesday for attempted murder in connection with the current gang conflict.
As reported, a suspect was arrested on Monday after the mass brawl and stabbing in Meidling and Brigittenau. The 29-year-old is said to have driven several suspects to Anton-Kummerer-Park (20th district) in a car on Friday evening and fled shortly afterwards. It was initially unclear whether it was the same man who is now in custody. Other suspects were still on the run on Monday.
Injured in a gunfight
The police assume that there may be a connection between the stabbing in Meidling on Sunday night and the mass brawl in Brigittenau on Friday night. In the first incident, the arguments escalated on social media. It resulted in a fierce firefight in which three people were injured. Syrians and Chechens attacked each other with wooden slats, pepper spray, knives and even firearms. The alerted police were able to arrest several young men in the vicinity of the crime scene.
Masked with glass bottles
Two days later, four people between the ages of 15 and 22 had to be taken to hospital in Meidling with serious injuries, one of them in critical condition. When questioned, they said they had been attacked by masked men with hammers, glass bottles, knives and guns.
On Saturday, a first suspect was arrested in Vienna-Donaustadt. A blank pistol and electronic data carriers were seized during a house search. The 29-year-old refused to testify and was taken to prison.
Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) announced on Monday that he would increase police presence in public places such as parks.
