European space travel can finally breathe a sigh of relief! The new Ariane 6 launch vehicle has been launched into space for the first time. The rocket lifted off from the European Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana (South America) on Tuesday evening at around 21:00 (CEST).
Unlimited cheers broke out at the European Space Agency (ESA) control centre in Kourou.
Ariane 6 was supposed to be launched in 2020. But there were always delays. This put European space travel in great need.
Ariane 6 is the successor to Ariane 5. It made its last flight last summer. Since then, Europe has had no access to space of its own and has lagged behind other major competitors in space travel, such as the US, Japan, China and India.
