Ukraine aims to recruit its male citizens of military age living in other European countries. For this purpose, a unit called the “Ukrainian Legion” will be created, stationed in Poland, where Ukrainians will be trained.
“We call on all Ukrainians in Europe to join the Ukrainian Legion,” Defense Minister Rustem Umerov said Wednesday, adding that their contribution is invaluable in “our struggle for freedom and independence.”
Education in Poland
According to the minister, the members of the new unit will be trained in Poland and provided with the best equipment. The initiative is part of the bilateral security agreement signed earlier this week in Warsaw by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
Most of the people who fled Ukraine before the war live in Germany and Poland. Among them are many men who wanted to avoid being drafted.
Ukraine needs staff
After two and a half years of war, the Ukrainian army is facing an acute shortage of soldiers. In May, a new law was passed that lowered the conscription age for reservists from 27 to 25.
