US recommends Ukraine to be open to negotiations with Russia

US diplomacy reminds Kiev that war fatigue is beginning to spread through many allied governments

US diplomacy has personally asked the Ukrainian government to leave open the possibility of negotiating a peace deal with Russia in order to convince the allied countries that the war in Ukraine will not be entrenched and that there is an exit option, sources have explained. . ‘Washington Post’.

These sources speak of a “calculated effort” by the US to guarantee Kiev the support of governments whose voters are growing tired of the conflict and the economic consequences it entails. “Ukraine fatigue is a reality for some of our partners,” a US official told the media on condition of anonymity.

However, the Joe Biden government has also conveyed to Kiev its belief that none of the Russian offers to negotiate has any credibility, given their exaggerated demands, which practically amount to unconditional surrender and the implicit recognition of Russian sovereignty over the territories that Ukrainians have connected. .

In fact, in late September, after the Russian annexations, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that it was “impossible” to negotiate with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin. “We will do it with the new president,” he said in a speech.

Washington officials consulted by the paper, however, do not rule out Zelensky’s support for the possibility of reopening negotiations once winter arrives, when the low temperatures make fighting practically impossible and open a window for diplomacy.

For the time being, and given Ukraine’s advance into Kherson and last week’s possible attack on the port of Sevastopol, US officials are now questioning whether Ukraine plans to launch offensives in the Crimean peninsula, a strategy that will ultimately surpass all expectations of a peace agreement, given the strategic importance this area, which has been annexed to Russia since 2014, represents to the Kremlin.

“Some of the G7 countries that have called for a just and negotiated peace see a potential turning point as Ukrainian troops move closer to Crimea,” the newspaper’s sources said.
