The US and other NATO countries want to provide Ukraine with additional equipment to defend against Russian airstrikes, US President Joe Biden announced at a ceremony marking the 75th anniversary of the defence alliance in Washington.
According to the joint statement by NATO countries, dozens of tactical air defense systems – such as those of the Nasams or Iris-T type – will go to Kiev. “These systems will further expand and strengthen the air defense of Ukraine,” the joint statement came from countries including the United States, Germany, the Netherlands, Romania and Italy. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said in Washington that his country would donate six F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, the Oslo newspaper VG reported.
The war-torn country is also expected to receive hundreds of additional interceptor missiles in the coming year, intended to protect Ukrainian cities from Russian missiles, Biden promised in his address to heads of state and government.
Ukraine fails to adequately protect cities
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has in recent months urgently warned that additional Patriot systems are needed to adequately defend Ukrainian cities and metropolitan areas.
The US had previously supplied Ukraine with a Patriot system. Biden approved the delivery about a year and a half ago, when Zelensky traveled to the US for his first foreign trip since the start of the Russian war of aggression. The US government also regularly supplies Ukraine with Patriot missiles.
Kiev says it has received a total of four Patriot systems so far, three of which came from Germany, while another was pledged by countries including Romania.
Ukraine main topic at NATO summit in Washington
The war in Ukraine is one of the main topics at the NATO summit in Washington. The meeting coincides with the heated phase of the election campaign in the United States. In November, the US presidential elections will take place – and after his TV debacle, Biden is fighting on all fronts against challenger Donald Trump to save his candidacy for the elections. The 81-year-old made a disastrous appearance on the evening television duel a week ago, made multiple promises and lost the thread. As a result, a new debate broke out in the US about whether Biden is the right Democratic candidate for the presidential elections in November.
