On Thursday at around 08:16 a rockfall occurred in Rydultowy, Silesia (Poland). One miner is still missing, at least 17 others were injured and taken to hospital. At the time of the accident, a total of 78 miners were working.
The rockfall was recorded at 1,150 meters below ground. Rescue teams were able to bring 76 miners to safety during the afternoon, but initially had no contact with two others. They finally reached one of them on Thursday evening. It will be brought to the surface and then examined, said the director of the responsible mining authority.
Search interrupted
The search for the second missing person was initially suspended due to further seismic activity. Rockfalls are sudden movements and collapses in rock cavities that are not caused by tectonically induced earthquakes. Mining explosions are a common cause. Rockfalls are difficult to predict and therefore pose a major safety risk to miners and people living in the areas.
