The water of the Seine has been suitable for bathing for ten of the last twelve days, but currently there is no “concern” in the Paris City Council about the promise to hold some events of the Olympic Games in the emblematic river, which will start next. July 26.
“We have no concerns about possibly carrying out all the tests,” said Pierre Rabadan, Councilor for Sports at the Paris City Council, this Friday.
Rabadan recalled that in May and June there was a lot of rain, which was an unfavorable factor in ensuring that the water was of sufficient quality for bathing, because at the end of the day “the Seine is not a swimming pool.”
However, he tried to provide reassurance by asserting that the organizers of Paris 2024 already expected that, if there was a lot of rain in the last months, there would be a delay in adjusting the water pollution levels.
On the other hand, with the increase of sunny days, in the last twelve days the Seine was suitable for swimming for a total of ten days, suggesting the positive signs seen for the first time at the end of June, when improvements began to be noticed . .
The adaptation of the waters of the Seine is one of the great challenges of the organization of Paris 2024, which has made a significant commitment to the river within its strategy to host the events of the Games in various emblematic places in the city.
The triathlon swimming event will take place on the Seine, on July 30 for men, on July 31 for women and on August 5 for the mixed relay. It will also host an open water marathon on August 8 for women and August 9 for men.
The administration has invested 1.4 billion euros since 2016 in an ambitious plan to allow bathing in the waters of the Seine, where it has not been allowed for almost a century for health reasons.
Due to the weather, which has been raining more than usual in recent months, the pre-Games swims have been forced to be delayed until the middle of this month, in which the mayor of the city, Anne Hidalgo, among others, will participate.
