The Schoenfeld family had an unforgettable vacation in the American state of Florida – but unfortunately not in a positive way. In the middle of the night, a fire broke out in their Airbnb vacation home. Eight people fled the flames via the balcony. The smoke detectors were apparently defective…
The family was woken up Tuesday morning by the sound of breaking windows in the coastal town of Destin. They initially thought it was a burglary, but then realized that a fire had broken out in the vacation home and was spreading rapidly. The goal was to get the children to safety as quickly as possible.
“We had to get her out to the balcony. We were trying to figure out the safest way to get her down,” says Lacey Schoenfeld, describing the dramatic minutes.
“I threw the children over the edge, where they held on to the railing and eventually dropped them on their cousin.” All eight people in the house eventually came out unharmed. But the damage is enormous: mobile phones, identity cards and three cars were lost in the flames.
Irreplaceable memorabilia destroyed
Particularly tragic: irreparable memories of a son in the family also fell victim to the fire. He died in an accident last October at the age of 20. “I had a bear with the sound of his heartbeat, my youngest daughter had his favorite hoodie covered in paint stains. My other daughter had a print of his heartbeat in a jar. These are things we can’t replace,” laments Lacey Schoenfeld.
It is unclear what caused the fire. No fire alarms went off, according to the family. Unfortunately, the neighbors did not notice the fire either; in any case, no one raised the alarm. The Schoenfelds advise checking the smoke detectors in vacation apartments.
