Four people drowned last night while attempting to cross the English Channel to reach the British coast from France, according to sources from the French Maritime Prefecture.
The shipwreck was discovered around 04:30 local time (02:30 in Euskal Herria) in the vicinity of the city Boulogne-sur-Merin the department Pass the Calais (North France).
Specifically, part of the boat the migrants were traveling on had deflated and there were several people in the water when it was located near a boat patrolling the canal.
With the help of a fishing vessel passing through the sector, two other rescue vessels joining the operation and a helicopter, A total of 63 people were rescuedbut four lost their lives.
Last year, a total of 29,437 people reached British territory after crossing the English Channel irregularly, down 36% from the record 45,774 set in 2022, according to official UK figures.
