Heavy storms hit Lower Austria again on Friday afternoon. Large hailstones made the area unsafe and numerous emergency calls were reported.
“A hundred emergency services” were deployed as thunderstorms, hail and storms hit mainly the districts in the west of the state, reported Klaus Stebal of the state fire command.
Around 17:00, about 180 fire brigades were called. Stebal spoke of 270 missions, mainly in Amstetten, Melk and Scheibbs. The storm front brought heavy rain and hail and moved towards the central area. In the market town of Wang (Scheibbs district) roofs were also destroyed by hail.
Trees fell on the street
According to the district fire brigade command, the Amstetten emergency call center (BAZ) has expanded its staff due to numerous emergency calls. Those affected by the storm included Kematen, Waidhofen ad Ybbs and Ertl. Emergency services throughout the district did their best. Cellars and buildings – including a bank branch – had to be pumped out, trees had to be removed from streets and blockages from streams had to be cleared.
